THE Government is compensating Arrow Group militias killed in action.
“We have just paid relatives of the six fighters killed last week,†the vice-chairman of the militia, John Eresu, said recently in Soroti.
The six include five fighters killed by the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels in an ambush at Aparisa parish, about 25 miles north of Soroti town.
The sixth fighter was killed when he left his battalion to visit his home.
Eresu said families of the dead would be paid sh2m each.
“The amount to be paid to each family as compensation would be computed according to the scale provided by the ministry of internal affairs,†Eresu said.
He said the Arrow Group register would be computerised.
“This would enable us to weed out ghost workers within the force and also ensure that their pay is not claimed by wrong persons,†Eresu said.
He said the UPDF had also started paying salary arrears for months worked since they joined the force.
He said the payment was being effected from one battalion to another and that it was likely to take time before all the force members were paid.
