FOUR people, including a UPDF Sergeant, died and 30 others were injured in two accidents on the Pakwach-Nebbi-Arua road on Sunday.

Nebbi district Police commander Richard Mvule said an Isuzu tipper lorry carrying mostly female fishmongers, overturned at Anyiribu trading centre, about 8km from Nebbi town, killing three people on spot.

The truck UAH 117Y, was transporting traders from Koboko to the market at Panyimur landing site on Lake Albert.

“The driver was over speeding. When they reached Anyiribu, he lost control and swerved off the road. Unfortunately he ran away but we shall get him,” Mvule said.

A total of 21 people, including three pregnant women and three children aged between six months and nine years, sustained injuries. Nurses at Nebbi hospital said a nine-month-old baby was taken to Arua Hospital after her mother Florence Vico, 40, of Koboko town, died. Ayub Khemis, 43, and another unidentified female adult are the others who died.

Scovia Okethwengu, a nurse at the maternity ward, said Stella Apayi, who was 12 weeks pregnant, was in a critical condition after fracturing her pelvic bone.

In another accident, a UPDF ambulance overturned in Pakwach trading centre killing Sgt. Richard Ociti who was attached to the 4th division in Gulu.

Nine people were injured and admitted to Pakwach Health Centre. Mvule said the driver of the ambulance H4DF 623 Fred Okwanga was over speeding and lost control at a sharp corner, a few meters from the Pakwach Bridge.

Okwanga fled the scene immediately. “I am cautioning drivers to check their speed. These two incidences are a clear example of how drivers get excited when they are on this section of the road,” Mvule said.

He also advised the fishmongers to hire separate vehicles for their merchandise. He said: “we are not going to entertain people sitting on top of lorries anymore.”

This is the second time in about four months that fish traders are involved in a fatal accident. In October last year, a lorry that was carrying fish mongers on the same road crashed into a narrow bridge killing, four people on the spot.
