WORKS and Transport state minister Eng. John Byabagambi has commissioned the reconstruction of the Mbarara-Ntungamo road.

Byabagambi conducted a spot inspection of the 58Km stretch from Ruti in Mbarara to Ntungamo town on Monday.

He said the stone quarrying phase should be done by January 15.
The 11b project is funded by the European Union (EU) and the Government and is supervised by of the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The contractors are Stirling Civil Engineering Uganda and Spenkon, who will each cover 29kms.

Stirling will start from Ruti, where the Masaka-Mbarara section, which is being done by Reynolds Construction Company stops.

Spenkon will start from Ntungamo town towards Mbarara town, joining Sterling.
Byabagambi said the Government had initially signed a contract to rehabilitate the road, but changed the scope to undertake complete reconstruction in phases, following advice from a consultant.

“The stretch is beyond rehabilitation because it is used by heavy trucks travelling to Rwanda. We took his advice because we want a long lasting road. We will pave the shoulders by 1.8 metres,” he said. “It should at least last 15 years.”

The stretch had deteriorated over the years with potholes and patches slowing down transportation and causing wear and tear to the vehicles.
The comprehensive rehabilitation of the Mbarara-Ntungamo, Mbarara-Bushenyi and Mbarara-Bwizibwera roads was initially to be fully funded by the EU.

However, when the plan for the Mbarara-Ntungamo section was upgraded, the Government had to contribute. The Mbarara- Bushenyi and Mbarara-Bwizibwera sections will be rehabilitated until 2010 when reconstruction starts.
