THE Police are holding four men accused of stealing over 100 bags of sugar and a trailer belonging to Interfreight, a shipping company based in Nakawa, a Kampala suburb.

Joseph Kabanda, Yasin Makanga, Yasin Kiiza, and Godfrey Muwanguzi alias Steven Mukasa were arrested on the New Year’s eve in Matugga town on Bombo Road.

Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said the four former employees of Interfreight conspired with others who are still at large.

She said the four were to transport the sugar to Tri-Star Company in South Sudan on December 31.

Police operatives from the Rapid Response Unit, working on a tip-off, trailed the group and found them off-loading the sugar which they planned to sell at sh4m.

“They had plucked off the genuine number plates from the trailer and fixed fake ones. They had planned to report to the Police that they were attacked by armed thugs after selling the sugar and the truck,” Nabakooba said.

The bags of sugar and trailer will be used as exhibits in the theft case.

The Police have also arrested a UPDF officer attached to Kaweeweeta training school in Nakaseke, Cpl. Augustine Tumwine and a civilian Ahmed Muyanja over attempted murder.

The two attacked Bashir Nyangoma of Katooki village in Ntungamo district on the night of October 13. They wanted to rob Nyangoma of the sh10m he had got from cattle sales. Nabakooba said the two fled after firing bullets and severely injuring Nyangoma’s wife.

“They were arrested last year with an AK47 riffle and six rounds of ammunition from their hideout,” she explained.
