FIVE men believed to have murdered a boda-boda cyclist at Nyanama Road in Kisingiri zone, Wankulukuku last Saturday, have been arrested.
William Lwasa, Frank Mubiru and Hamza Wasswa, all residents of Wankulukuku and two others arrested from Katale near Kajjansi on Entebbe road, are being held at Katwe Police Station.
The assailants are believed to have approached Gerald Ssentalo, 20, posing as passengers and made-off with his motorcycle after strangling him.
“They were his friends and clients. Their target was to take the motorcycle. We suspect they killed him for fear of being identified,†said Kenneth Kagame, the chairman of Taata Jimmy boda-boda stage ‘B’ in Wankulukuku.
Ssentalo started the business at Taata Jimmy stage ‘A’ on a bicycle in 2004 before joining stage ‘B’, for motorcycles, in 2007. His colleagues at the stage described him as a good boy who never had any problem in the community where he was living with his brother only identified as Ssenyonga.
“He used to come for guidance and we discussed a lot of issues about the business. By the time of his death, Gerald was planning to increase his savings and buy a Mate-motorcycle to make money to build a house,†said Joseph Kabaalu, a friend.
Kabaalu said Ssenyonga supported Ssentalo to generate his own income. By press time, the Katwe Police criminal investigations boss could not be reached for details about the murder.
However, a file number SD Ref: 07/10/2009 had been opened. “Our problem is insecurity. There are no measures to check our customers and we cannot tell when they will turn against us,†said Kagame.
“People who steal our motorcycles are mostly youth, who sell them at give-away prices.â€
Area residents said the Local Defence Unit officers had not done enough to ensure security.
