THE Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has not released the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) results for Amuru district over unpaid registration bills of about sh1.25m.

The district education officer, Ben Okwai-Moi, on Sunday said the principal municipal education officer, who had gone to collect the results, returned without them because of the debt.

He said the district registered 56 non-Universal Primary Education (UPE) candidates, who were supposed to pay sh10,000 each for registration.
“We thought UNEB would consider them under the UPE programme,” Okwai-moi said.

He added that the 56 had dropped out of school, but were encouraged to go back during the Go Back to School education campaign organised by Amuru district together with the United Nations Children’s Fund.

“These children were under the Catch Up Education programme of ECHO-Bravo, a nongovernmental organisation, and they were attached to Koch-Goma, Olwal Mucaja and Pagak primary schools from where they sat for PLE,” Okwai-moi said.

“UNEB said their registration fees had to be paid. This was because they are considered non-UPE since they dropped out of school,” he added.

Okwa-Moi stated that UNEB is also demanding a balance of sh624,000 for registration forms which Amuru did not pay.

He said UNEB wanted the bills cleared before the results could be released.
Okwa-Moi said the former inspector of schools, Gladys Acayo, collected the money but she died last year before handing it over.

“We shall try to find where the late inspector of schools kept the money, but in case we fail to get it, then the district will have to meet the expenses,” he said.
