THE on-going dry spell in many parts of the country has created perfect conditions for bush fires. It is common to see bush fires in many rural areas. In the north, several people have been killed by the fires. As a local leader, you have the duty to stop these fires.

Here is how to do it:

  • Call a village meeting and explain to residents the dangers of bush fires.

  • Give examples, for instance the incident where an old woman, Pirijina Akullu and six children were burnt to death in Ojile village, Pader district.

  • Involve children because they are also culprits in starting the fires.

  • Identify all bushes that may be targeted for fires.

  • Discuss measures to stop the fires.

  • Set up a committee to guard against bush fires and to act in an organised manner in case of an outbreak.
