UPC diehards in Bushenyi district have hailed President Yoweri Museveni and the Government for pardoning Chris Rwakasisi, who has been on death row in Luzira Prison for the last 25 years.
They described Museveni’s gesture as a land-mark in Uganda’s history.

The district UPC chairman, Edward Rurangaranga said: “We thank the President for not killing him and we thank him for letting him out of prison.”

He prayed: “Thank you God and forgive us for the sins we have committed.”
Rurangaranga said elders and some politicians had in several occasions requested the President to forgive Rwakasisi.

He said when he and a group of elders visited the President at his country home in Rwakitura, they requested Museveni to pardon Rwakasisi.

“I am grateful and thankful to him (Museveni) for responding to our call,” Rurangaranga, a former local government minister in Milton Obote’s government, said at his Kitagata home in Bushenyi district.

He appealed to the Government to assist people who get released after spending a long time in prison to settle down.

This, he explained, was a gesture of love and comfort.
