Health workers whose poor work ethics discourage patients from seeking treatment in hospitals have been warned.

The MP for Ndorwa West County in Kabale district, David Bahati, expressed concern that pregnant women continue to lose their lives because some irresponsible health workers and midwives mistreat and abuse them.

He was on Monday opening a one-day conference on safe motherhood and family planning organised by Family Health International at Kasheregyenyi Parish Centre in Kamuganguzi sub-county.

Bahati said the NRM Government had constructed several health centres countrywide and wondered why pregnant women prefer delivering at home or with the help of traditional birth attendants.

Grace Kutesa, from Family Health International, called for the prioritisation of women’s health care.

The Kabale acting director of health services, Isaac Mbaruka, revealed that his office had blacklisted 29 health workers who were said to have been undermining health services in the district.
