Barack Obama has every sign of a physically and mentally healthy man. He is lean, athletic, lively, upbeat and calm. A UK magazine, Men's Fitness, named him among the ‘25 Fittest Guys in America’ last year. The US’s ABC said of him: Obama, 47, has often been seen going to the gym, riding and playing basketball, according to Daily Record of UK.
In an August interview with a South African magazine, Men’s Health, Obama said his typical routine includes working out for 45 minutes, six days a week. His workouts include cardiac-strengthening routines and weight lifting. He also plays basketball games whenever he can.
Even when his schedule is jam-packed, he insists on time to workout. “The rest of my time will be more productive if you give me my workout time,†the magazine quotes him.
He treats exercise as a requirement and not a passtime. The President’s close friends say that the more his life intensifies, the more he visits the gym to release stress, and afford time to think without interruption. Sometimes, he wears headphones to barricade the outside world.
“He does it every day like clockwork,†said Marty Nesbitt, one of President Obama's closest friends from Chicago.
“He doesn't think of it as something he has to do. It is time for himself, a chance for him to reflect. It’s his break. He feels better and revved up after he gets in his workout.â€
Even during the hectic presidential campaigns, Obama’s aides knew they had to arrange for workouts in the various states he visited. The staff called gyms a few days before his arrival and persuaded them to close late or open early to oblige the candidate’s schedule. Once last year, on July 17, Obama visited a gym three times within 16 hours. Other days, often before primary election nights, he flew in half a dozen friends to play a few hours of basketball.
“You have to make time for him to exercise, at least an hour or so. You block it out and put it on the schedule, because that’s what makes him happy,†said Jim Cauley, who managed Obama's 2004 US Senate campaign.
His strong belief is that physical fitness yields mental fitness, and the two concepts have been married in his mind ever since. “It’s always been a priority in his daily routine,†said Christopher Lu, a marathon runner who worked as Obama's legislative director in the Senate and was named Cabinet secretary last week. “I think it's an example of how disciplined he is. It’s one of the things that really keeps him balanced.â€
Even Obama's snack food is lean, reports ABC News. He has also given up smoking.
Obama takes his health very seriously by going for regular medical checkup and he would take very seriously even a scratch on his body.
Dr. David Scheiner, the US President’s doctor since 1987, said of his patient: “Obama exercises regularly, often jogging three miles. He has a balanced diet, with good intake of roughage and fluids.â€
