PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has reiterated his call to NRM cadres to be disciplined and not to look at politics as a profession. The President, who is also the chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), made the call while closing a one-day seminar for former NRM MPs at Statistics House in Kampala on Saturday.

The former MPs recently formed the National leaders’ Empowerment Association, as well as NALECO, a savings and credit cooperative society.

According to a State House statement issued yesterday, the President said: “Politics is about ideology. You should not join politics because you are looking for a job. You will not be useful to your country. Politics is a sacrifice and a service to the people.”

Museveni commended the MPs for their contribution to the 7th Parliament.
He encouraged the MPs to venture into the private sector.

The President blamed poverty on leaders whom he said did not heed to his advice in 1995 to mobilise the public to adopt commercial agriculture.

He, however, commended some leaders in Kapchorwa and Soroti districts who he said listened to his advice and were now reaping good income from production of wheat and citrus fruits. He again pledged to build a fruit processing factory in Soroti district.

The President promised that roads would be repaired and that the energy problem would be solved.

He called for the attraction of more investors into the country to increase employment opportunities.

Museveni also called for the sensitisation of the public on the Land Bill. He assured the public that LRA leader Joseph Kony would not return to disrupt peace in the north.

The President also disclosed that two resident teachers in each secondary school would act as commissars to sensitise students on national politics.
Lt. Gen. Jeje Odong thanked the President for meeting the MPs.
