THE selection exercise of Senior One students begins today at Mandela National Stadium. About 900 head teachers of government-aided and private schools will admit over 210,000 students.

The first term begins on February 16 for Senior One while other classes resume school on Monday.

Head teachers interviewed by The New Vision indicated that the selection would be very competitive because of the poor performance recorded in last year’s Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). Top schools are expected to set their cut-off mark between four and eight.

Some of the most competitive schools last year are; Mt. St. Mary’s, Namagunga, St. Mary’s College, Kisubi, Uganda Martyrs S.S. Namugongo, Gayaza High and Nabisunsa Girls. Others are King’s College, Budo, Namilyango College, St. Henry’s College, Kitovu, Ntare School and Makerere College.

UNEB statistics show that out of the 463,631 candidates who sat the PLE last year, only 17,021 (3.7%) passed in division one. 154,774 (33.4%) were in division two, while 138,796 (29.9%) passed in Division three. 63,761 (13.8%) pupils passed in division four.

The stiff competition will mainly affect the 150 top government-aided schools, which are not taking part in Universal Secondary Education programme.

Last year, a total of 173,814 students were enrolled under the Universal Secondary Education programme.

A similar number will be admitted this year according to an official from the education ministry. There are 1,114 government aided schools in the country.

The official said all students who passed last year’s PLE would be considered for USE.

According to the guidelines, all candidates who scored the pass-mark of aggregate 28 should be admitted.
Meanwhile, last year’s Uganda Certificate of Education results will be released on Friday, according to UNEB officials.
