KALERWE Market vendors on Gayaza road have expressed dissatisfaction over the poor garbage management in Kawempe Division.

During a recent sanitation tour, residents continually yelled complaints to the division leaders, including the sub-county chairman, Haji Nasser Kibirige Takuba, about floods caused by stagnant garbage in drainage channels.

“The water has turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” said David Nkubuge, a market vendor.

“The channel was last cleared in October 2008. The division officers wait for a year to unblock the channel after our health has been endangered,” he added.

Takuba said: “This is an appaling situation which we have to solve with the technical team in-charge of sanitation and drainage management.”
He added: “This is a wetland. If KCC is to go by the National Environment Management Authority’s regulations, over 50,000 people would be homeless.”
