THE UPDF in northern Uganda are cleaning major markets and hospitals and planting drought-resistant trees as part of the activities to celebrate the army week.

Speaking ahead of the army day, Tarehe Sita, due on Friday, the regional UPDF spokesman, Capt. Ronald Kakurungu, said the army was committed to strengthening its relationship with civilians.

He said the activities were being carried out in all districts of the north.

Tarehe Sita will be celebrated under the theme “Consolidating Defense and Security in Solidarity with the People for Prosperity for All”.

“We shall clean Gulu Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor and Gulu Independent Hospital,” Kakurungu said.

He said the army had requested the National Forestry Authority to provide 1000 seedlings of various tree species for planting.

Kakurungu said some of the species would be for timber production.

Phillip Lawoko, the Gulu municipal town agent, thanked the UPDF for the exercise. He said garbage collection was a big challenge to the town.

“We have only one lorry, which picks garbage from the town twice a day to dispose of at Laroo dumping site,” said Lawoko.

“It is opportune that the UPDF has come in.”
