I was a head prefect

Being a prefect is demanding and can affect your classwork.

Being a prefect is demanding and can affect your classwork. But if you are a bright pupil, you can manage — like these former head prefects, reports Godwin Ayesiga

Jeremiah Kato, 12,
Kireka Hill Infant School, Wakiso scored aggregate 6

Besides being a head boy, I was the class monitor. I had to wake up at 4:30am to do my homework before embarking on my duties as the head boy. The assistant head boy helped me to handle most of the work. Since leadership comes from God, I used to pray to God to help me excel in both academics and leadership. I used English to communicate to other pupils. This helped me get a good command of English. I intend to become a head monitor when I join Bugema Adventist Secondary School.

Emmanuel Ampeire, 14,
Kisule Nursery and Primary School Bukoto Kampala scored aggregate 5

I had 21 prefects to work with. To make my work easy, I drew a duty roster. I used to reach school by 7:00am, assign the prefects on duty different areas and go to class to read. The prefects used to give me written reports about the areas assigned to them at the end of each day. This helped me in making a weekly report to the headmaster. I also had a revision timetable. Leadership has helped me get skills and confidence to lead others and I want to be the timekeeper of Namilyango College.

Douglas Wamani, 13,
City Parents School, Kampala scored aggregate 4

I spent more time on my class work. I used to supervise the prefects after completing my class work. As a leader I learnt how to mobilise pupils to work as a team. I liked my work as a head prefect and I want to become a prefect when I join King’s College Budo.

Steven Waiswa, 13, Lohana Academy,
Kampala scored aggregate 4

Leadership did not stop me from excelling in PLE. I used to wake up at 5:00am and would reach school by 7:30am. I did not make a duty roster for the prefects and so most of them were on duty throughout the term. But sometimes I would do my homework late in the night because I never wanted to fail in my duties as a head prefect. However, it is not easy to be a head prefect because indisciplined children think you are favoured by teachers. For that matter, I do not intend to become a prefect when I join King’s College Budo.

Isaac Nuwahereza, 13, Kampala Model School Kyebando, scored aggregate 5

The deputy head teacher, Grace Turyamusiima, helped me make a duty roster and he assigned me twice a term. This gave me time to revise my books. Most of the work was attended to by the sanitary prefect, with the help of other prefects. However, I had to supervise the pupils during break, lunch and assembly time. Being a head boy has helped me learn how to make decisions and be confident.
