MAKERERE University has reclaimed the East Africa University Games title it last won in 2005. The games concluded yesterday at Namboole with Makerere top of the medal table.

Sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi handed over the winners’ trophy to the university’s senior sports tutor Peninah Kabenge.

Makerere, who also won the men and women titles, collected 44 gold medals, 20 silver and 18 bronze, to top the table.

The university dominated swimming, winning 30 gold, and took the chess and badminton titles.
Defending champions Ndejje finished second in the games that attracted 32 universities, the biggest turnup ever in the games history.
Kampala International University’s skeleton team held on to beat Kyambogo University to third place.

They were inspired by Emily Nanziri and Waiswa Lukungu double gold strikes and two more from Janet Achola and the handball team. Nkumba were fifth with Kenyatta the best performing foreign entrants at sixth position.

“It was a big challenge for us organisers but we are happy the games ended successfully,” said National University Sports Federations in Uganda (NUSFU) secretary Patrick Ssebuliba, whose only problem was that six universities arrived without confirming their participation in advance.

The games aim is to instill competitiveness and friendliness among the region’s tertiary institutions.

Uganda hosted the games after the would-be hosts Dar es Salaam University pulled out after the institution was hit by student unrest.
