SOROTI Municipal Council has refused to extend the period for Omega Construction Company to complete tarmacking a road in the municipality.

The town clerk, Jimmy Ambrose Atwoko, said the company did not start the work within the agreed time.
Omega officials started working on the road last week, but the municipal authorities stopped them, saying they were waiting for communication from the works ministry. The contractors, however, did not stop.

“The contract period expired last year. It is only the ministry, which can authorise an extension,” said Atwoko on Monday.

Atwoko said the sh374m deal to tarmac 1km of Lale Road, was signed in June last year, but the contractors never turned up to work.
He warned that if the contractor continued with the work, they would be doing it at their own cost.

“They cannot request for the money, because the contract has not been formally extended,” Atwoko said.
He said if the contract was to be revised, stringent terms would be set and the project would be closely monitored.

“If they fail to adhere to the new terms, they will be penalised,” he said.

Twoko said if a new contract was to be signed, the cost for work outside the agreed period would be transferred to the contractor.

Omega’s site foreman Alfred Abila, however, said they held a meeting with the works ministry officials in Entebbe last Friday. He said it was agreed that the contract be extended for three months.

“Let them be patient. We have started the work and we shall complete it to their satisfaction,” said Abila.
