It was 1998. I was at work and was restless as colleagues kept receiving gifts from their loved ones while I was getting none. At about 4:00 pm, someone delivered gifts to me — a bouquet of flowers, perfume and a beautiful card. They were from my boyfriend. We had dinner at home and went to the Cinema Cineplex on Wilson Road and watched Jerry Maguire.

I had just broken up with my boyfriend and was in a new relationship. This was about 10 years ago. Valentine’s Day came and I received two cards, one from my ex and one from my new boyfriend. I was confused. I was scared about having two people compete over me. They both asked to take me out to celebrate the day, but I declined. I was not sure what would happen. It was not easy.

I was at university and he was my first boyfriend. Valentine’s Day 2006 was supposed to be a blast. I had spent two weeks getting ready for it. Then everything went wrong. He said he would pick me from campus, so I waited. I did not go to class. From 7:00pm until about 9:00pm, he was nowhere. I called and asked what had happened. He said he was on his way. I waited until midnight. I lay on my bed worried, but hopeful. I dozed off, woke up at 6:00am and I was stilll dressed and wearing my shoes. I cried my heart out. He showed up the next day and gave me flowers. He said his car broke down. I did not listen.

I was in Class 6 (P6) and got a card from this Asian boy. I was horrified. We were just kids supposed to play hockey and here was this boy sending me a card. He was my friend and we were both prefects, but I did not expect it to have gone that far. After that I could not talk to him that much.

My first real feel of the day was last year when I got a phone call from my boyfriend, who is abroad. We normally communicated over the phone but on that day, he called to say how much he loved me. What made it more interesting was that he had earlier told me he would not call. He called and we talked for an hour. It was all the usual stuff and then he sent me a gift that day. This made my day.
