ACCORDING to Dr. Martin Marembwe, a specialist in tropical diseases at Mbale Regional Hospital, signs and symptoms of worms include: Chronic fatigue Chronic digestive problems like bloating, constipation or diarrhoea
Bulky stool with excess fat Food allergies and environmental intolerance Joint and muscle pain as well as inflammation
Anaemia or iron deficiency Hives, a rash, ulcers, swelling and sores on the body Restlessness and anxiety Multiple awakening during the night
Grinding the teeth Excessive amount of bacterial or viral infections Depression Difficulty gaining or losing weight Addiction to bread, alcohol, fruits or juice
Treatment Albendazole is a highly effective drug. Each tablet costs sh300. It is available in packs of three tablets which constitute a complete dose.
Vermox is effective for treating threadworms. The dosage is one tablet for an adult or a child aged two to 12, irrespective of their weight or size. Some children may find it easier to take the tablet if crushed or mixed with food or a drink.
If a threadworm re-infection occurs after two weeks, repeat the treatment. A vermox orange-flavoured tablet contains 100mg of mebendazole. The drug is available in packs of four or six tablets. Each packet costs about sh12,000.
Other products for treating worms include vermox suspension, combantrin tablets, combantrin chocolate squares, combantrin tablets and combantrin-1. They are available at most pharmacies.
The best way to prevent worms is by maintaining sanitation and ensuring there is adequate and safe water.
