WITH temperatures soaring close to 30 degrees centigrade, top seed Duncan Mugabe turned on the heat to blow away James Bayego in the Tusker Malt Lager Uganda Open at Lugogo yesterday.

WITH temperatures soaring close to 30 degrees centigrade, top seed Duncan Mugabe turned on the heat to blow away James Bayego in the Tusker Malt Lager Uganda Open at Lugogo yesterday.

The 18-year-old Mugabe took 55 minutes to storm the quarterfinals in straight sets 6-1 6-1.

Mugabe’s victory over veteran Bayego in the lunchtime heat, kept him on course for the top prize of cash sh1m.

Mugabe will face sixth seed James Odongo today for a place in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, Zimbabwean Martin Dzuwa beat Uganda’s Julius Oyet 6-4 6-2.

In the women’s category, 14-year-old Lydia Ndagire, pushed on by a cheering crowd threatened to bring down seasoned Rosette Musoke.

Ndagire raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set before Musoke found her touch to win the set 7-6(2). Musoke took the second set 6-2 to win.
