The Church of Uganda on Monday started celebrations to commemorate the life of Janan Luwum.
Luwum, the former Archbishop of the church, was murdered in 1977 during Iddi Amin’s reign.
He was accused of being involved in a secret movement that was planning to overthrow Amin’s government.
After Luwum’s murder, his body was put in a staged car accident.
The one-week celebrations started with a match from All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero to Luwumu Street in the Kampala city centre.
The Chief Justice, Benjamin Odoki, who was the chief walker, said the former archbishop had remained faithful to the Church up to the time of his death.
He said Luwum was a bold and intelligent leader, who challenged Amin at the time when very few people would dare.
Odoki called on Christians to emulate the former archbisholp, and criticised the way he was tried and condemned.
“I attended his trial. Luwum was condemned without being heard,†Odoki said.
The first day of the celebrations was crowned with a service led by retired Bishop Eliphaz Maari and a lecture by the assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese, Zac Niringiye, at the All Saints Church.
Niringiye criticised Amin’s regime, which he said was run on ethnicity.
The celebrations will be concluded on February 22 at St. Janani Luwum Church at Nsambya in Kabalagala.
The theme of the celebrations is ‘Faithfulness unto death’.
