TOP seed Duncan Mugabe was again in bullish mood as he dispatched compatriot James Odongo in straight sets to set up a highly billed semi-final clash against Rwandan Jean Claude Gasigwa at the Tusker Malt Uganda Open at Lugogo tomorrow.

Cheered on by his Lugogo Club fans on centre court, Mugabe took just one hour and a minute to see off Kampala Club’s Odongo 6-2 7-5.

Mugabe quickly wrapped up the first set but Odongo put up a spirited fight in the second set, stretching the teenage top seed into a tie-break.

Mugabe, who was ejected by Burundian Hassan Mwirisho in the second round of the Kigali leg of the ITF Money circuit last week, was delighted to stay on course for the Uganda Open title.

“It’s great to be in the semi-finals. I want to do my best at this level,” Mugabe said.

“I lost concentration in the second set and let him back in contention. I have to maintain concentration in the remaining matches.”

Mugabe faces Gasigwa, the winner of the Kigali circuit, for the first time in his career.

Martin Dzuwa of Zimbabwe (seed 2) had to fight past seed seven Godfrey Uzunga 6-2 6-4 to make the semi-finals where he faces Kenyan Francis Rogoi.

Rogoi outsmarted Robert Buyinza 6-3 7-6 (7-0) while Gasigwa beat Godfrey Zziwa 6-0 6-0.
