CITY business operators have warned Kampala City Council (KCC) staff against stepping in their shops to levy or demand trading licence fees.

In a meeting held at Kikuubo Lane recently, the traders also threatened to close their shops in protest over the fees increment.
Last month, KCC increased the licence rates in a bid to increase revenue collected.

However, the business operators through the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) declined the increment, saying it was uncalled for since KCC had failed to provide services like garbage collection.
“We shall neither pay nor quit the city as Sebaggala advised us,” the businessmen chorused.

Mayor Nasser Sebaggala said traders opposed to the licence fees should operate from rural towns.
In a meeting chaired by the KACITA spokesman, Issa Ssekitto, the business operators resolved to continue fighting until KCC revises the rate.

“We cannot tolerate this exploitation. We do not want to waste time in courts of law,” Abbey Muweesi, a trader, said.
