My baby has no appetite for food

Mar 01, 2009

DIET is important especially for a child. Poor diet makes a child sick. No medicine replaces a good diet. If your son does not take the foods above, he hardly has a source of protein.

Ask the Doctor with Dr. Paul Semugoma

Dear Doctor,
My two-year-old son has very poor appetite. He does not take milk, chicken, eggs, meat, or bananas and is normally constipated. Is there medicine for this?
LM

Dear LM,
DIET is important especially for a child. Poor diet makes a child sick. No medicine replaces a good diet. If your son does not take the foods above, he hardly has a source of protein.

No wonder he is not gaining weight. He risks getting kwashiorkor! If your son has digestion problems with milk. give him other sources of protein like soya-based foods.

A child should not determine his diet. He will want only sweets, pancakes and biscuit. The parent should make and follow a balanced diet plan.

Do not replace a good diet with junk food. LM, with your son not gaining weight and constipated, you should see a children’s doctor (paediatrician) to rule out other problems.

Discuss his diet and feed him well before he falls sick.
