MUNICIPAL council law enforcement officers on Tuesday impounded kiosks that were illegally built around Jinja Taxi Park.
The enforcement chief, Dauda Mugalya, led the operation that started at about 8:30am. Four kiosks were taken to the municipality yard.
The kiosks were allegedly built without permission from the town clerk, David Bashakara.
Owners were ordered to remove their merchandise before the kiosks could be taken. However, those who refused had their merchandise thrown out.
However, one kiosk Owner, Salim Mohammed Kisiitu, a dealer in soft drinks and snacks engaged in a scuffle with the officers, arguing that he had paid ground rent to Mugalya.
“I wanted space and Mugalya directed me to a tenderer called Bob. They told me to pay sh150,000 which I paid and I was shown this space for my kiosk,†Kisiitu said.
He said kiosk owners paid sh1,000 daily as tax dues to the tenderer. Kisiitu said Mugalya often sent his officers for sh50,000 or sh20,000, which he would pay for fear of being evicted. The Police intervened to calm the situation down.
Later, they reached a compromise and Kisiitu’s kiosk was relocated. Kisiitu called upon the Government to apprehend corrupt municipal officials in the town.
However, Mugalya denied the accusations and said the operation would continue to Walukuba and Masese divisions next week.
