Tororo district has launched a sh337m road construction project. The project, under the Community Agricultural Infrastructural Improvement Programme, will be implemented in Merikit sub-county.

The LC5 chairperson, Emmanuel Osuna, and the resident district commissioner, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, commissioned the project on Tuesday. Hashaka told the contractor to avoid shoddy work, saying local leaders and the community would monitor the construction.

He said the district was evaluating local contractors after Abach Contractors, a company which built Nagongera Health Centre general ward, was blacklisted for doing substandard work. Hashaka said the district would not hesitate to employ outside firms, were not doing good work.

The chief administrative officer, Felix Esoku, said the work, expected to be completed in six months, was being done by Niyo Construction Company.

He said the launch was part of the first phase of the 60km roads construction network in the sub-county.

He said work will cover the Merikit to Nyeminyem 5km road, Aruwa to Maliri, 4.9km, CA Trading Centre to Agururu, 8.2km and Kamokya to Amurwo, 4.4km.

Esoku urged the contractor to employ local people. However, the firm’s managing director, Innocent Safari, said there was a negative attitude towards work in the district.

He said for the one week they had been in the sub-county, only 10 people had sought employment with the firm, adding that the rest spent their time in the town drinking alcohol.

Safari said the firm would employ workers from the neighbouring districts if the residents do not apply in time. Agro-processing facilities like a rice huller, grain mill and produce store would also be constructed under the project.
