THE 400m race between KIU’s Waisswa Lukungu and FAME Sports Club’s Stephen Odwar promises to be the highlight of the national track and field season starting at Namboole today.

But even if any of the two runners hits world record breaking time, they will not qualify for the World Athletics Championships because of the absence of an electronic timer at the tartan track.

Explaining the absence of the device, Uganda Athletics Federation publicist Namayo Mawerere said: “It’s expensive to hire the machine from Nairobi."

International Association of Athletics Federations rules dictate the use of electronic times to qualify sprinters for world events. Only the Africa Junior Championships qualifiers have been exempted from the rule.

At Namboole, Odwar and Lukungu will again renew their rivalry, having registered impressive times before.
Odwar warmed up for today's event in Kisumu while Lukungu is looking for more success after lifting gold at the East Africa University Games in February.

  • National half marathon champions Isaac Kiprop and Adero Nyakisi are among the top runners invited for the 8th annual International School of Uganda Family Fun Run due to be held at Lubowa on April 26.
Proceeds from the event will go towards helping the disadvantaged children.
