About 100,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) returning to their homes in the Acholi sub-region will receive free seeds and agriculture tools.
This follows a new humanitarian project launched by the Red Cross Society.
They will receive seeds to boost food production, Janet Angelei, the organisation’s economic security coordinator, said rentely.
“Most of them have access to land, but cannot afford to buy seeds and agricultural equipment,†she explained.
The seeds and tools are bought from the local traders, which makes a positive impact on the economy, Angelei added.
In Amuru, she said, about 3,800 families had been selected to receive vouchers that will enable them to buy the farm inputs.
In Kitgum and Pader, the organisation will support about 6,600 families.
Angelei said the Red Cross was working with the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation and the agriculture ministry to ensure that the farmers receive quality inputs.
She said the project was aimed at helping people improve their livelihood.
