EDITOR’S COMMENT

VERY soon, ordinary Ugandans will have a chance to demand accountability from their leaders through citizens forums or sub-county bimeezas.

The forums, guided by the accountability secretariat, a section of the Ministry of Ethics and Integrity, will boost the fight against corruption.

They will also boost communication between the sources of funds (the central government) and the recipients since information about the disbursement of funds will be readily availed to the people at the grassroots.

This will give the local people the ability to judge whether the money was spent well or not. The system has been one of the missing links in the fight against corruption.

However, for it to succeed, it should be more than information that must be provided. The people must be empowered to question their leaders.

They should also be cautioned to keep politics out of accountability issues.
