PARLIAMENT has given the Government two weeks to come up with a statement on the President’s initiative on patriotism.
Rubaga MP Beti Kamya told Parliament yesterday that President Yoweri Museveni’s patriotism tours had generated a lot of interest from the public.

She said several MPs, especially from the opposition, had little or no information about the concept and could not educate their constituents about the subject.

“The President’s initiative is important. We need to move together as a country. We are asking for a statement so that we know the role each one of us has to play,” Kamya said.

Okello Okello (Chua) asked for information on who drew up the patriotism syllabus and what its implication on the education system would be.

Museveni has for over a month addressed workshops countrywide urging teachers to embrace patriotism.
During the addresses, the President urged the teachers to preach the message to the young generation through the formation of school patriotism clubs.

Speaker Edward Ssekandi asked the Government to make a formal statement on the matter.

Ssekandi tasked Beatrice Wabudeya, the Minister for the Presidency, to present the report.

He said the role of political leaders in the campaign should be clearly explained.
Addressing students and teachers at Mary Hill High School in Mbarara district on Saturday, the President disclosed that the clubs would be funded by the Government in the 2009-2010 Budget, saying they were involved in a national effort.

In other tours, Museveni stressed that the Constitution provided for patriotism.
He cited Article 189 of the Constitution as a provision that mandates the President to campaign for patriotism among the citizens.
