HELEN Kiyayi, 22, was crowned Miss Makerere University Business School 2009/10 last Friday at Kati Kati Restaurant.

She beat eight other contestants and won a Toyota in what was referred to as the most competitive pageant ever.
Kiyayi, a second year student of human resource is born to the late Samuel Longoria Betty Among, a resident of Loputuk, Kangole sub-county, Moroto District.

She is the second born of seven children
She talked to Miles Rwamiti about her life before and after being crowned Miss MUBS.

Who is Helen Kiyayi?
I am a Karimojong. My dad, Samuel Longoria, passed away in 2004. I stay with my mum Betty Among. She is a busines woman in Moroto. I went to Child Jesus and Moroto Municipality for my primary education. I joined Kangole Girls’ for O’ and A’level.

How did you win the contest?
It is all about confidence. I had to build confidence to make sure everything I did was perfect. I also impressed the audience and the judges with nice poses and clever responses to the and clever responses to the questions.

Do you think the judges were fair?
Yes, very fair. Students also acknowledged that this has been one of the best ever pageants, without corruption. I also asked my fellow contestants, who told me it was fair and I really deserved the crown.

How does it feel like being a winner?
At first it felt like a dream until my friends began congratulating me. I thought: Is this me or someone else? I thank God and my friends.

Did you ever think you would be crowned the most beautiful girl in MUBS?
No! When I first came to Kampala, it was to join MUBS and my friends back home told me that the most beautiful girls in Uganda are from the west and central. I do not consider myself the most beautiful girl in MUBS, but I am among the most beautiful.

What do you have in store for your fellow students?
As soon as we get back, I plan to do a lot, especially for the people in IDP camps. I have always been concerned about them. There are also other internal school problems which I want to put to an end to.

Tell me about your love life.
(Laughs). It is a personal thing. Besides, that is a minor issue.

Would you leave your boyfriend if you found a love message in his phone?
I would take time to find out who has sent the message before jumping to conclusions. But if it happened I would leave him and move on.

Do you think men are cheats?
Some men are, others are not. For example, a man may be married with children, but you find him dating young girls.

It is true that many university girls have sugar daddies?
Yes I have heard of it, but I have not seen it happening. I am not into that kind of relationship.

Have you heard about the credit crunch?
What’s that? I don’t know about that credit thing, maybe if you explain more.

What are your hobbies?
Making friends, visiting sick people, sports, swimming.

What do you want to be in future?
A model. I hope I can become a top model in Africa one day.
