Nagenda, where are your manners

EDITOR— I am an admirer of Mr. John Nagenda’s writings but take exception to his article of March 28 entitled “Pontiffs remain in Rome”. In the article, Nagenda took a swipe at the vicar of Christ, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI over his remarks in Cameroon on the use of condoms.

Accusing the Holy Father of “pontificating on matters sexual, yet he does not have the experienced reference” is the height of ill manners not expected of Nagenda’s stature. It is a well known fact that condoms are not 100% safe, a fact even recognised by the Lacent, the so-called prestigious medical journal.

A case in point is our own Uganda, where infections have gone up despite importation of millions of condoms. Can we therefore not say that these rubbers are not the alpha or omega in the fight against this scourge?

Does behavioural change constitute a more effective prevention method? Indeed, the late Bishop Misaeri Kauma once remarked, “Abstain and be faithful but if you are foolish, use a condom!”.

I never heard anyone consigning him to the lairs of Canterbury. In the same article, Nagenda contradicts himself by quoting very low birth rates in Rome. Are these rates a result of condom use or are indeed the effects of strong Catholic doctrine? I weep for you John.

This time you have definitely entered the ground where angels fear to tread. In yesteryears, you would have made a good candidate for excommunication (if you were lucky to be Catholic). In the worst case scenario, perhaps the hangman’s noose would be around your neck. The Catholic doctrine is time-tested and the surest way of avoiding this scourge.

May Nagenda retract his article with its attendant innuendos. An apology through Mbuya would not be far-fetched.
