BARCLAYS Bank has named Charles Ongwae as its new managing director. Ongwae has replaced Charity Jinya who has been posted to Nairobi after serving for slightly over a year.

The bank announced in a statement on Wednesday that Ongwae takes over effective May 1, subject to obtaining regulatory approval from the central bank.

Jinya will take up a new role within the east and west Africa region.

Michael Kaddu, Barclays’ head of corporate affairs, said: “Senior management changes in Barclays are a normal occurrence in line with our business growth agenda.”

Adan Mohamed, the managing director of Barclays East and West Africa, said Ogwae would take forward Barclays’ franchise by building on the work of Jinya.

Jinya said in a statement she was confident Ongwae’s experience and knowledge of Barclays would drive the business forward.

Ongwae was chief financial officer of Barclays East and West Africa. He holds an MBA in Strategic Management and a Bachelor of Commerce degree, both gained from the University of Nairobi. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Last year, Jinya took over from Nick Mbuvi who had spearheaded the acquisition of 100% stake in Nile Bank. In February 2007, Barclays sealed a take-over deal, merging its seven branches with Nile Bank’s 25.
