Who would you Crucify and why?

OVER 2000 years ago, Jesus of Nazareth, the central figure of Christianity, was crucified for allegedly “claiming” to be the King of the Jews, which according to Jewish law, was blasphemous.

For this, they demanded that he be crucified in what would eventually lead to a gruesome, slow, painful and shameful death.

Today, we find that a lot more people might, perhaps more justifiably, need to be crucified for one reason or the other as Stephen Ssenkaaba and Carol Kezaabu found out from different people

General Kahinda Otafiire, Minister of Trade and Industry
If there was anyone to crucify I would crucify you (Ssenkaaba) for asking me such a question. Why do you want me to crucify people? I am not a judge.

Irene Namubiru, musician
I do not have anything to do with Christianity. But if I had to crucify anyone, it would be all those men that sexually molest minors. These people subject young ones to physical and emotional pain.

They destroy the future of youngsters and yet they are sometimes let off the hook. I would do anything to destroy these men.

Kenneth Kimuli aka Pablo, comedian with Theatre Factory
Wow. I have a million things running in my head. Since Kibwetere died, I would have to crucify the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebel leader Joseph Kony.

Firstly, because he is killing his own people. Secondly, he has no justified reason for carrying out all those atrocities. He claims to be heading the LRA and you wonder: Is he resisting the Lord or what?

Kony surely needs to be crucified; he is crying more than the bereaved without even knowing who has died, ha... ha... ha… heeee. He is using his grudges against the Government as reason to kill innocent people, just like blaming a road for the sins of the market.

Kony does not believe in sense. Alongside him, I would crucify those that are funding him and his activities.

Ssebaana Kizito, president Democratic Party
I would crucify the Electoral Commission: I find it at fault. They should go. They are incompetent, too biased and have failed to foster democracy.

They have not done enough to ensure free and fair elections and have failed to revise the laws that particularly fuel undemocratic practices. They are guilty.

Susan Amooti, administrative assistant
The people I would like to see crucified are the reckless drivers who terrorise us on the roads. I have just attended a funeral service of a friend who was run down by a speeding vehicle.

I was also nearly involved in an accident on Entebbe Road; and I learnt that the driver of the car that almost hit ours was a learner and did not even have a driving permit.

Many people are dying everyday from accidents caused by careless drivers. These are the ones I would crucify.

Pastor John Michael Mugerwa, Katwe Saints Gate Church
Jesus was crucified so that you and I could walk free. Since I preach forgiveness, I would not condemn anyone to be crucified for if you and I crucify, then Jesus was crucified in vain.

We should preach forgiveness and practice forgiveness. If Kony or those involved in human sacrifice and past dictators like Obote asked for forgiveness, let us forgive them.

Alex Mukulu, playwright
If I had to crucify anyone for anything, it would be myself. Crucifixion is not about pointing fingers; it is about taking responsibility for our own failures.

I would crucify myself for failing to recognise my failures and failing to help others out of their evil ways. All the things that we might want to blame the Government, Police and other institutions or individuals are a reflection of our own failures.

In the end, one realizes that by crucifying others, we will be crucifying ourselves. I would not crucify anyone as that would be judging them.

Jim Muhwezi, Member of Parliament
Why should I crucify anyone? The Constitution and international conventions do not provide for this kind of action; there are legal procedures to follow.

But if we were to go back to the times of Jesus, there are quite a number of people that would deserve crucifixion — people that have caused genocide and those that have done all sorts of despicable things.

They are several, but I will not pinpoint. However, as we celebrate Easter, people should not do things that would make others wish to have them crucified.

Phillip Byomuhangi, entrepreneur
Homosexuals: Those are the people I would crucify because of what they represent and the moral decay they have inflicted on our nation. I would also crucify George Bush for fighting useless wars and causing the economic crisis that has drifted to our country.

Raga Dee, musician
I want to crucify the credit crunch. It is because of it that I am suffering. The dollar is up; building materials like cement, sand and other necessary material are expensive. I really want to crucify credit crunch and make sure ‘he’ does not resurrect.

Sheikh Suleiman Kakeeto, Amir Daula (leader) of Muslim Tabliq community In Islam.
We do not believe that Jesus was crucified. Looking at the situation today though, I would recommend that all those people that kill our sons and daughters should be crucified. They are claiming innocent lives. They should be sacrificed just like they are sacrificing our children.

Daisy Martina Shubi, S.6 vacationist
I would crucify those people who sacrifice children for monetary gains. To believe that killing someone will bring you wealth is idiotic and the suffering they cause the parents and friends of the victims is unjustified.

I am afraid to walk on the streets by myself and fear for my little brother who is trusting and naïve. These are the people that I would crucify for making everybody live in fear.

Angelina Wapakabulo, community activist and social worker
Whenever someone talks of crucifixion, I automatically think of our Lord Jesus Christ and there is no one that I would equate to Jesus and the sacrifice he made on the cross for us to get right with God.

That is the only significance I have to the crucifixion, so I cannot even imagine it as a way of punishment for anyone today.
