THREE kingdoms have received sh1b from the Government for
agricultural production.

Finance minister Syda Bbumba yesterday handed over a copy of the transfer forms to officials from the Buganda, Busoga and Bunyoro kingdoms.

She said the funds were a pledge by President Yoweri Museveni to the kingdoms.

Buganda received sh350m of the sh2b pledged, while Busoga and Bunyoro each received sh325m of the sh1b pledged by the President for each kingdom.

“This is the first installment. We have many priorities, but we put the kingdoms among the top priorities. We are going to disburse more money,” Bbumba told the kingdom officials at the ministry boardroom yesterday.

“It is up to you to choose how you are going to use this money as long as it goes into production,” she said at a function attended by the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury, Chris Kassami.

Buganda’s package was received by the kingdom water minister, Ahmed Bamweyana, while that of Busoga was received by premier Prince Wilson Muwereza.

Bunyoro’s premier Yabezi Kiiza received the money on behalf of his kingdom.

Kingdoms, Bbumba said, played an important role in mobilising the public to improve agricultural production so as to ensure food security and increase household incomes.

She added that the funds would also help the kingdoms mitigate the effects of the global economic crisis.

The minister advised the kingdoms to partner with the National Agricultural Advisory Services so as to utilise the funds well.
“At a later stage, additional resources will be provided to support model farmers to commercialise.”
