SAMWIRI Opio Aweri was on Thursday laid to rest in his village in Agwata sub-county, Dokolo district. Aweri, a strong supporter of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), was the father of Justice Ruby Opio Aweri and Levi Okodi Macpio, a presidential adviser.
President Yoweri Museveni described Aweri as a hardworking and dedicated citizen who unreservedly served his community in several respects.
“He was a progressive farmer and above all a staunch supporter and member of the NRM,†the President said in a message read by the lands minister, Daniel Omara Atubo.
Aweri, 86, died of pressure and diabetes at Lira Medical Centre last Monday.
Museveni, who contributed sh1m to the family, commended Aweri for guiding and encouraging his children to be focused and responsible.
“While words of comfort cannot suffice, I pray that those that remain emulate his legacy,†Museveni said.
Atubo also contributed sh200,000 towards the burial expenses.
Justice Caroline Akello, who represented the Principal Judge, James Ogoola, said Aweri worked hard to educate his children.
The Lango paramount chief, Yosam Odur, thanked Aweri for promoting education and encouraged students to enroll at the All Saints University in the region. He also urged the locals to stop fighting over land.
The deputy Inspector General of Police, Julius Odwee, officials from the High Court and district leaders attended.
