PATRIOTISM is described as a term meaning “Love for or of one’s countryâ€. Patriotism has a prefix “pat†which means “manâ€. For example a patriarch is the male head of a family or a tribe. But it has its opposite — matriarch. A matriarch is the head of either a family or tribe or social group who is a female or a woman. “Mat†means “motherâ€.
Any biological being comes into existence through the mating between a male and female. The first human family system was by a female, and is referred to as a “matrilineal†family system. Through changes in technology and property relations, the family eventually fell under the control of the man and is now referred to as a “patrilineal†family system.
All family members now belong to the clan of the man and not the woman as it was when she was the head. In view of the above love for areas where we dwell and work we should take into consideration both the mother and the father.
Therefore, the appeal for love of country should not bear just one terminology — “Patriotism†it should include the term “Matriotism†so that both our fathers and mothers are loved in common. It should be “patriotism-matriotism†meaning love for “father-mother land†so that we do not love one above the other. In the case of President Barack Obama, for example, his love for the US is matriotism because in the US he is a product of just a “mat†when his “pat†relation remained in Kenya. What is Patriotism-Matriotism? It can be understood through practical day-to-day life. The subject occupies quite a number of areas. For example when it comes to land, how should land be owned in a patriotic-matriotic way? You cannot be a patriot or matriot and at the same time be found to be so greedy that you possess an amount of land that disadvantages the welfare of others.
A patriot-matriot cannot practice forgery or snobbery or perjury since he or she holds office on behalf of fellow citizens.
If he or she owns a mine, or a plantation, a ranch, oil field, factory, plant, big and large economic units in general, patriot-matriots cannot be found mistreating their employees simply because they want labour at the cheapest cost possible by paying workers the least from the profits they get.
A patriot-matriot cannot increase his or her salary above the economic levels of his or her country. This means every person’s income should be more-or-less, similar to that of other members of society. There should be that combination of sisterhood and brotherhood in a socio-economic formation from the family level to the state.
In a patriotic-matriotic state, every worker or employee, in a mine, plantation, ranch, oil field, factory, plant, forwarding or warehouse should be able to look after and protect every type of tool, machine, or raw material. This will help every economic unit to be run and administered very economically to avoid losses. This benefits both the employer and the employee whose lives depend mutually on that economic unit. The employer should protect the worker and the worker should protect the employer. Each party should have an appropriate proprietary attitude.
In education, every teacher should make sure that what they teach children is useful for the future of that child who will grow old and be a chief social productive force. Teaching in schools therefore should not be a job but a duty. The brain of a child is a fundamental human garden in which the necessary seeds for human continuity should be planted.
Health workers should be conscious of the fact that the health of each member of our country is an economic asset. We all survive due to those who work. When any of them is sick there is reduction in the processes of economic production in economic units. So every medical expert is an economic contributor to our economic life by maintaining and sustaining the bodies of our citizens.
Every taxi driver should be conscious that he or she is carrying those who produce food, cloth, build houses, doctors, teachers of his or her own children so that he or she develops and possesses a sense of responsibility as he or she drives a vehicle carrying such members of our country. That is love for our country.
Every minister in the Government plus all those under him or her should have a sense of why they are in that position. It should not be just an honour with congratulations when one becomes a minister. It should be to serve his or her people.
On coercive organs of the state apparatus like the army, the Police and prisons: A soldier is a legal killer of the body of those considered anti-people in a father-mother land. He or she should choose carefully whom to kill, why, and under what circumstances in order to avoid being anarchical and abusing innocence on the part of those who are good. The concept of Patriotism-Matriotism may be found lacking among many countrymen and countrywomen, young and old.
It is therefore, necessary to preach the gospel to all. Whoever thinks that it should not be taught is very rich in ignorance, mentally staggering and, spiritually dehydrated.
