THE Ministry of Health has set aside sh400m for the renovation of Apac Hospital. Addressing district leaders in the hospital boardroom on Thursday, the state minister for health, Dr. Richard Nduhuura, said the refurbishment would to start this month.

Nduhuura said Spencon Construction Company would rehabilitate the children’s ward in the first phase.

“I am assuring you that the rehabilitation process will be carried out in phases,” Nduhuura said. The minister warned the contractors against poor work.

“The community must monitor the contractors and ask questions whenever you notice a problem, for example, the poor mixing of cement and sand,” he said.

The minister wondered why most buildings had already developed cracks. “I hear some contractors arguing that the cement and sand of these days are not of quality compared to the ones in the past. This is unbelievable!” Nduhuura said.

The medical superintendent, Dr. Alfred Acanga, said the hospital’s X-Ray and other vital equipment had been non-functional for a long time, forcing medical officers to refer patients to private health facilities.

He noted that the 40-year-old district hospital, with a 100-bed capacity, now accommodates more than 1,000 patients at a time.

The hospital, Acanga said, had never been renovated and most of the absolete equipment installed long ago was still being used.

Acanga named other ill-equipped sections as the out-patients department, laboratory, theatres, the mental units, TB/Leprosy unit and the ultrasound section.
