THE Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) needs an extra sh4.6b to effectively play its role as a market watchdog.

“We met President Yoweri Museveni two years ago and he asked us to indicate our level of funding,” the bureau’s executive director, Dr. Terry Kahuma, explained.

“We presented a request of sh12b, but were only given sh7.8b, leaving a funding gap of sh4.6b. This was two years ago. Now, new developments have taken place, meaning that we could even require more,” he told the industry and technology state minister, Rev. Father Simon Lokodo, at UNBS’ head office in Nakawa.

He said the bureau was also still locked in a land acquisition struggle with the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA).

“There is a lot of bureaucracy in the land acquisition process that has made the bureau delay survey of land that was allocated to us by UIA in Bweyogerere for construction of a permanent home,” he said.
