A 12-year-old girl was on Monday night battered to death allegedly by her mother and grandmother for eating goat meat and wetting her bed.

Ann Amoit helped herself to the meat that her mother had reserved for her grandmother who was away attending a funeral of a relative.

The neighbours said when the grand mother returned, she discovered that her grand daughter had not only eaten the meat but had also wetted her mattress and not taken it out to dry.

For this, her caretakers are allegeded to have beaten her in their home in Ngere Chom village, Mukujju sub-county, Tororo district.

Neighbours said they overheard the victim crying as she was being beaten for almost an hour. Thereafter, they said Amoit went silent.

However, the neighbours were shocked to learn about the girl’s death the following morning and reported the matter to the Police.
The suspects, Margaret Nyafwo and her mother Zerita Athieno, were detained at Tororo Police Station.
The Tororo resident district commissioner, Mpimbaza Hashaka, on Tuesday instructed the Police to halt the transfer of Amoit’s body to Busitema in Busia district for burial.
Hashaka ordered for a postmortem examination.

“If it is confirmed that the girl died of torture then the assailants must face the law accordingly,” said Hashaka.

Tororo district Police commander Gaudencio Okumu said the body of Amoit was taken to Tororo Hospital mortuary.
