JOSEPHINE Namanda and Diana Businge finally lifted the second leg of the Club National Beach Volleyball championship at Lido Beach, Entebbe on Sunday.

The winning pair, who have lost the finals of the last three circuits, overcame Prossy Alobo and a visibly rusty seed one Mariam Nakamanya 2-1, in the final.

The two young mothers took the first set 21-17 but faltered in the second set going down 21-11. They however recovered to win the decisive set 15-9.

“I’m surprised the players have received the new rules very easily and the competition has been stiffer. I’m sure by the time we go for the Mombasa International (in June), we shall have the best team,” Beach Volleyball Commission chairman Mofaht Masaba said.

The new rules set by the global volleyball governing body FIVB do not allow players to spin, and it allows for one side to play three touches before it goes over the net.

The champions had eliminated Andrina Namata and Mercy Tabitha in the semi-finals while Nakamanya and Alobo saw off Florence Nannyondo and Yelena Juma.

In the men’s category, Amon Ainebyona paired with Johnson Kawenyera to beat 2008 International Champions Pierre Kamugasha and Gadaffi Tamale in straight sets in an exciting final.

The next event is the Club Open on May 31.
