EDITOR—On Sunday, I was shocked to hear on Radio Unity FM a group of UK students and their pastor, heaping praises on their host and friend, Ogwang Okul. This was in a bid to market him politically. The public had wrongly been prepared earlier to tune in and listen to visiting UK philanthropists under Ogwang’s NGO, Peace and Conflict Resolution in Africa.
Alas, we got the contrary! They even bluntly went ahead, one by one, to ‘beg’ Kole (apparently they were not well briefed for they kept referring to Kole as a village) voters to consider Ogwang as a leader and give him a chance to serve politically! Is Ogwang that desperate? I thought that was outrageous and asked myself whether any country would allow that. How can foreigners come here to campaign for someone?
Isn’t that an insult to Uganda’s sovereignty? People like Ogwang who may wish to serve politically should know this basic fact and even strive to protect it. If you want to be a legislator and you cannot observe basics, then right-thinking people are more worried about this country.
Same with media houses. I think it is also their responsibility to know what to broadcast and what to reject.
Is this kind of behaviour allowed in the United Kingdom? The embassies in Uganda should brief their citizens to respect our sovereignty.
