FGM shock
- Members of Parliament were on Wednesday startled when Kanungu MP Dr. Chris Baryomunsi brought graphic details of female genital mutilation (FGM), as he presented a motion seeking leave of the House to introduce a private member’s Bill banning FGM. When he started a Powerpoint presentation, he warned the House there would be some “shocking details” and advised that those under the age of 18 or the fainthearted should keep out of the House. When the images started appearing, the MPs were horrified by the ordeal the women who undergo FGM have to bear. Baryomunsi advised that this was science to shock them into reality.

Every dime counts
- The DP president, John Ssebaana Kizito, is an interesting man. Though he is ranked as one of the richest men in Kampala, he still has love for small money. Appearing before the parliamentary committee on local government accounts to answer land irregularities during his tenure as KCC mayor recently, he amused the MPs when he demanded his allowance. “Mr Chairman, you know very well that I am a busy businessman. Any minute lost means a lot to me. Now who is paying my allowances for this meeting?” Ssebaana asked, prompting one MP to respond: “Eeee, Mr Ssebaana, even you, you still want these small allowances?” The committee chairman, Abdu Katuntu, assured him that witnesses are not paid.

Tough Ssebulime
- Dr. Kizza Besigye cannot be the only tough man in the FDC! The Masaka FDC chairman, Joseph Ssebulime, is another no-nonsense bigwig in the party. When NRM members described FDC as weak, during a workshop between parties and the Electoral Commission in Masaka recently, it didn’t take two minutes for Ssebuilime to order his men to beat up the opponents. “How can you say that FDC is weak?” he asked, as his followers battered the NRM members, causing havoc at the workshop held at Hotel Brovad.

Wrong joke
- Never joke with Ngora MP Francis Epetait! Akol Rose Akullu (Bukedea) blundered and wrote to him a chit reading: “Why are you dancing in the middle of a forest when a hungry lion is walking somewhere?” Epetait termed the chit as intimidating. He had just called for disciplinary action against Francis Ecweru for writing to the Prime Minister asking for the suspension of NUREP funds to NGOs operating within Teso. However, the deputy speaker, Rebecca Kadaga, dismissed it as a joke.
