UGANDA’S permanent representative to the United Nations, Ruhakana, Rugunda has met Ugandan physicians, doctors and nurses based in the US and Canada.

While addressing the 4th annual Uganda North America Medical Society (UNAMS) scientific conference at the Westin Hotel, Princeton, New Jersey, recently, Rugunda hailed their efforts in sharing experiences and expertise with counterparts in the US.

UNAMS is a non-profit organisation that brings together physicians and dentists who have interest in Uganda.

“When you visit Uganda and work in hospitals, sharing your skills with colleagues in health services is a contribution you should not underestimate,” he said.

UNAMS chairman Joseph Buwembo said some members of the association had travelled to Uganda to offer health services, donate medical equipment and teach health matters.

“Our mission is goodwill, professional excellence and community health,” he said.

Participants noted that while the Government had made some positive improvements in the health sector, there was concern that its priorities were biased.

They noted that Ugandan health workers were paid miserable wages, a factor that made them migrate to other countries.

“We need to continuously review our priorities given our limited resources. We have to find means of increasing the pay of our health workers, otherwise we shall continue training them for other countries,” Rugunda said.

The UN envoy also stated that plans were in advanced stages to enact a law to allow dual citizenship.
