RECONSTRUCTION work on Main Street in Jinja town has resumed.

The exercise, which was flagged off last year by the now embattled mayor, Muhammed Kezaala Baswale, saw a stretch from Eng. Zikusoka to Gokhale roads completed at a cost of sh119m.

Nile Avenue, which runs between Bell Avenue and Kisinja Road, was also worked on under the same programme.

Hibo Construction won a tender to reconstruct the entire Main Street, whose length is about 1.7km.

The initial budget for the reconstruction of the street had been projected at sh1.1b.

The second part of the construction, which began from Gokhale Road to Clive Road, started this month.
Another section from Clive Road to Ripon Road is also under construction.

The municipal engineer, Saidi Muhammed, said another sh830m was expected to be released from the Government in the 2009/10 financial year for the roads.

“Hopefully when that money comes, we shall be able to start working on the remaining part of the street,” he said.

Muhammed said Balita Road in Mpumudde division and Nabeta Road in Walukuba division were also earmarked for repair. The town clerk, David Bashakara, urged the contractor to ensure quality work.

He said work on most roads in the town was poorly done due to corruption.
