YOUR LETTER OF THE WEEK

Petrol station and bank robberies in Kampala are becoming the order of the day! Almost all the gas stations and bank robberies I have read about are facilitated by private security guards!

The robberies are growing into a regular industry! Employing security guards from one security agency is the height of indiscretion. It provides opportunities and incentives for the guards to make a one-time earning for the rest of their lives. Even an honest person may fall prey to the scheming thieves.

A simple counter-measure could be to employ security guards from more than one agency and keep shuffling them constantly. It would be wise if the security contract was divided between two or even three agencies. It would greatly reduce the chances of the guards conniving to rob the places they are supposed to guard. If a small station or branch needs only two guards at a time, it will be less likely that the two will conspire to rob it. When signing the contract with a private security agency, it should include an indemnity clause asking them to make good any loss incurred as a result of the involvement of their guards. Depending on private security agencies alone is not wise. The agencies should be supplemented with the police and/or any other effective law enforcement officers.
