JUSTINE Bayigga will lead the sprinters battle as the race to qualify for the World Championship resumes with the third national trials at the tartan track Namboole today.

JUSTINE Bayigga will lead the sprinters battle as the race to qualify for the World Championship resumes with the third national trials at the tartan track Namboole today.
The sprinters are also eyeing two slots for the Africa permit meets in Khartoum on Thursday and in Addis Ababa on May 24.
The two events have electronic timers which will boost the two runners’ chances of qualifying for the World meet to be held in Berlin in August. Electronic times in contrast to hand times qualify athletes for the world event and other major international competitions.
Bayigga is making a comeback to athletics after a spell in rugby where she represented the country at the IRB Women Sevens World Cup in Dubai.
The experienced runner is up against Emily Nanziri and Mildred Gamba.
Elsewhere, middle distance runners led by Jimmy Adar will also be in action at Namboole.
“In such events, there are electronic timers and we give the best athletes the chance to qualify,†Uganda Athletics Federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru said.
“We need one male and one female athlete to represent the country at each of the two events.â€
Adar, will come up against Gombe SS, Yuda Chesire and UPDF’s Cleopus Onyiiro, together with a host of other middle distance runners from Kapchorwa and Bukwo as they fight for the lone men’s slot at the event.
“At least I know that Adar and Cherop (Alex) are part of the team. Running on tartan will give the athletes better times,†explained Godfrey Nuwagaba, the manager of Standard Camp.
