I experience pain while urinating

May 17, 2009

THOSE symptoms are consistent with infections of the urine passage (kidney, bladder and urethra). They are caused by bacteria that pass from the anal region and vagina (in women) into the urethra.

Ask the doctor- with Dr. Gloria Ndagire

Dear Doctor,
I have been experiencing a lot of pain while passing urine since the second month of my current pregnancy. I also visit the toilet many times a day. This is bothering me. What could be the cause and what can I do to get better?
JN

Dear JN,
THOSE symptoms are consistent with infections of the urine passage (kidney, bladder and urethra). They are caused by bacteria that pass from the anal region and vagina (in women) into the urethra.

But some are acquired from contaminated surfaces like dirty toilet seats. They can also be passed on sexually. Pregnant women are at risk due to hormonal changes that occur during this time.

The infections are usually treated with oral antibiotics but may recur. The diagnosis is usually made by examining the urine.

A culture and sensitivity test will help to determine the best antibiotic. Visit your doctor for this test. Also take plenty of fluids, do not hold urine for long, and keep clean. You will get better.
