EDITOR—I respond to two letters about Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC). The first letter was from someone in eastern Uganda complaining that the UBC Radio network could not be received. He also implied that the service provision of station was better when the latter was the former UTV/Radio Uganda.

The second letter was from a female viewer who was extremely displeased that her favourite soap on UBC TV, The Gardener’s Daughter was oftentimes interrupted by live transmission of some soccer matches. I would like to elaborate on these concerns. It is true UBC’s coverage in eastern Uganda has had a slight fault.

This has been occasioned by the damage of some of our apparatus in the area in thunderstorms and other unforeseeable problems. This has led to our engineers overhauling many of these facilities—a lengthy activity. However, our technical crew is doing all they can to ensure we back on air as soon as possible especially in the effected parts of Mbale and parts of Pallisa. Any inconvenience caused to our listeners is highly regretted.

The second letter focusing on our much loved telanovella soap Gardener’s Daughter also raises a true and important fact. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings this soap is at times dislodged to make way for live Premiership or UEFA Champions League matches. When this occurs the soap is either aired earlier on the same day or during the omnibus repeat over the weekends.

Scrolls of the change of programmes to make way for live transmissions are usually communicated to our viewers earlier on, in the days before this interruption. One should note that programme changes often occur during live transmission of events; live tournaments and special occasions.

However, UBC TV always ensures to compensate the viewers affected by the change of their favourite programme. UBC remains committed to providing quality broadcasting services to the people of Uganda.
