DENIS Onyango is determined to redeem his status as Cranes’ first choice custodian during Uganda’s high-profile friendly against Ghana on Sunday.

The lanky South Africa-based goalkeeper is part of the 22-man squad that regroups today at Namboole for the build-up against the Black Stars in Tamale.

Onyango has not featured for Cranes since the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. The SuperSport custodian was not only criticised for the Cranes’ 4-1 defeat away to Benin, but he also accumulated bookings and was suspended for the team’s ultimate match against Benin last October.

“I want to have a new start and I am ready for the assignments,” said Onyango, one of the foreign-based players called.

Onyango came under attack after a series of poor decisions against Benin.

Hamza Muwonge is waiting in the wings.

Ghana will use the game as preparation for their 2010 World Cup qualifier against Mali.

The squad: D. Onyango, H. Muwonge, S. Masaba, H. Kavuma, G. Walusimbi, J. Owino, J. Mukubya, J. Bagoole, D. Walulya, M. Doka, D. Wagaluka, O. Kasule, P. Ochan, S. Sserunkuuma, S. Bengo, G. Sserunkuuma, G. Massa. E. Ssepuuya, P. Ssenyonjo, B. Olobo.

* CECAFA has secured new sponsors for the club championships and the U-17 cup after months of searching following the collapse of GTV, reports Reuben Olita.

Regional body secretary general Nicholas Musonye disclosed in Nairobi yesterday that the clubs event will enjoy a package of $600,000 (sh1.4bn) courtesy of new sponsors in Khartoum and $60,000 from President Paul Kagame of Rwanda.

The regional body has now increased the prize money from $60,000 to $100,000 with the winners getting $50,000 (sh113m), runners-up $30,000 and third-place $20,000. Previous teams won $30,000, 20,000 and 10,000 respectively.

Musonye said Sudan will sponsors the U-17 event at $400,000. The date was fixed for Aug. 23 -Sept. 6.
